Relationships 101

Welcome to today’s lesson on forging strong relationships. No, we are not talking about your relationship with your mom. This is business! In business, we create networks with people who may or may not propel us towards success. Building a network is no easy task, but it is the most important thing that you will do for your career. Consider this, you are a business owner that has been using the same marketing materials for years now and people have stopped responding. Obviously, it is time to mix it up but your creative juices will not flow. Who are you going to call? Not Ghostbusters, someone in your network of business professionals. These are the people that can brainstorm with you or lead you to a good resource. That is one way in a million that the relationships you build now can pay off later. Now, check out these master tips to get you networking like a pro.

  1. Figure out the people who matter the most. These are the contacts who are the most valuable to you. Think of it as your Top 20
  2. Now move on to your Top 100 contacts that have helped you or may in the future. Contact them periodically.
  3. Find a simple way to engage as many new people as you can. Send them an email or introduce yourself.
  4. Help someone as a way to connect with them. If they mention a need or a desire, something as simple as sending them a link to a related article is enough to show that you care.
  5. Cliché, but be interesting. People will listen to you if you can catch their attention.
  6. Forget positions and focus on people. In 5 or 10 years, that person you ignored could be the next CEO.
  7. Give before you need to ask for a favor. In other words, build and maintain relationships in a way that makes people want to help you when you need it.
  8. Generosity should be your middle name. Constantly help others. Reach out to your contacts all the time and offer resources.

I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed this post. Tune in every Tuesday for more!
